Why a Raised Toilet Seat and Toilet Safety Arms Work Better Together

The bathroom transfer is one of the highest risk moments in a senior's day. Sitting down and standing up from a toilet requires balance, leg strength, and timing all at once. Most safety equipment in this category solves part of that problem. Very little of it solves all of it.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 800,000 older adults are hospitalized every year because of a fall, and CDC research has found that about 80 percent of all bathroom injuries are caused by falls. The biomechanics matter. A healthy adult stands by transferring weight onto the legs and pushing up with leg strength. An older adult with reduced leg strength often needs to recruit upper body muscles to help. Without arms to push on, that help has nowhere to go. With arms, the user can use their hands, arms, and shoulders to take some of the load off the legs during both lowering and rising.

  • Confirm whether the toilet bowl is round or elongated before ordering.
  • Review the dimensions and compatibility information for both products.
  • Install both pieces during the same session when possible.
  • Make sure neither product places unintended pressure on the other.

  • Check that the raised seat does not shift on the bowl.
